Nearby Attractions
The Mercure Eastgate Hotel is well located close to the centre of Oxford and all the attractions this beautifully historic and artistic city has to offer. Oxford’s educational and cultural heritage is unavoidable. Most obviously, the hotel is well positioned for reaching the Oxford University Colleges, particularly Magdalen, Queen’s and Merton colleges, and the examinations building. A particularly popular destination is Christ Church College, thanks to parts of the Harry Potter films having been filmed here. A walk further into the city will bring you to the Ashmolean Museum, which as of early 2009 is undergoing a massive refurbishment and is expected to reopen in November 2009. Equally important is the Bodleian Library, the second largest library in England after the British Library and one of the oldest such buildings in Europe.
Oxford is also home to several art galleries and museums in which to spend a pleasant afternoon, and boat tours down the Thames from Oxford are also popular attractions. Furthermore, Oxford is a great destination for shopping, with two shopping centres, The Westgate and The Clarendon Centre, as well as a number of high street shops and Oxford’s famous covered market.
